In Memoriam

We condole the sudden and sad demise of Prof. Theotonio C. Pereira from the Department of Physics on 2nd October 2015. In fact Prof. Theo was in good health and had taken his regular lectures on Thursday, 1st October 2015. He passed away as a result of a massive heart attack that night. Prof. Theo was a distinguished alumnus and a dedicated teacher.

The College acknowledges with gratitude his services for the past 28 years in the Junior College as a teacher and mentor. He had served the College in various capacities as a Class-Teacher, Dy. Chief Conductor of HSC Board Examination, Convenor of the Junior College Exam Committee and many others including being the EUMIND Convenor, Summer School Organizer etc. All his friends and colleagues will recall his simplicity, honesty and cheerful approach. He was a great lover of music and gadgets and he connected well with the younger generation. Among the students he was a popular teacher. We convey our heartfelt condolences to the family and pray for the departed soul and we assure our support to his wife Mrs. Sharmaine Pereira and their two children Ms. Shanice and Mr. Sean.

We are sad to announce the demise of one of our eminent alumnus, Bishop Ferdinand Joseph Fonseca on 2nd October 2015. He completed his Bachelor of Arts from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai in 1946. He passed with honors in Latin. He joined the Bombay archdiocesan seminary in Parel in 1946, a year before India’s Independence. Bishop Fonseca lived in a retirement home for priests in Bandra.

GoolamWe condole the sudden passing away of one of our eminent alumni Mr. Goolam Vahanvati on 2 September 2014 in Mumbai of a heart attack. He was the 13th Attorney General for India from 2009 to 2014. Earlier he was the Advocate General for Maharashtra from 1999 to 2004 and the Solicitor General for India till 2009. He distinguished himself in the legal profession and has made a significant contribution to the country.

Mr. Vahanvati obliged us as the Chief Guest for the Annual Honour’s Convocation held in 2009, when he was also felicitated as a distinguished alumnus of St. Xavier’s College.

eustaceWe are sad  to announce the death of one our eminent alumnus Maj. General (Retd) Eustace D’souza. The funeral service was held on Sunday 31 March 2013 at 1600 HRS IST at St.Peter’s Church, Bandra West, Mumbai followed by burial at Mt. Carmel Church, Bandra.

A 73 year old distinguished alumnus of St. Xavier’s College -·· GRACIAS SALDANHA – Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd., passed away on July 21, 2012.

Gracias did his Masters in Science from the University of Bombay and Diploma in Management Studies from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management, Mumbai. He worked with a number of international pharmaceutical companies from 1964 to 1971.·He then founded Glenmark Pharmaceuticals.

A visionary and successful entrepreneur, Gracias was a ‘people’s person’.· Having founded Glenmark with just 3 employees and only his Pension Fund as capital, he realized the critical importance of values in an organization.· Trust, respect, knowledge and fairness were the pillars on which he built Glenmark Pharmaceuticals. He offered high quality products at affordable prices and was responsible for the introduction of many novel products in the country.· Gracias was a true Xavierite.

His wife Blanche, children Cheryl, Glenn, Mark and Blossom are also alumni of the College. St. Xavier’s College is proud to pay tribute to this family of distinguished entrepreneurs!

Bishop Gilbert Rego, an alumnus of St. Xavier’s College, passed away on June 21, 2012. He attended St. Mary’s School, Mazagaon and St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. He participated in all types of sports: football, hockey and sometimes cricket.

He did his regency in Talasari. He took spontaneously and joyfully to the simple life of the people, learnt Marathi and its dialect. He was ordained a Bishop in 1971 and was the first Bishop of Shimla-Chandigarh. He soon built a most architecturally beautiful church, which attracted many visitors. The political authorities and administrators had a personal regard for him (a model relationship between the Church and the State). Even a word from him, moved them to action.

MUKUL SINGHAL: An alumnus of the college from the Physics Department, Mukul expired on July 15th 2012.  A generous benefactor of the college, Mukul was always ready to help his alma mater. A Xavierite to the core.   He was on the Board of Studies for Physics and  a member of the Alumni Association of the college. Mukul was the President of the Manufacturers Association for Information Technology (MAIT) from 2006-2008. He was the C&MD of Lipi Data Systems Ltd.

St. Xavier’s College will surely miss Mukul Singhal. We offer our sincere condolences to his family.

We regret to inform you of the sad, premature demise of Dr. Ms. Bakhtawar Sethna, on Saturday, 3rd March, 2012. She served the college as a faculty member of the department of Geology since 1979. She was currently Head of Department at St. Xavier’s College and the Chairperson of the Board of Studies in Geology at the Mumbai University.

With a heavy heart we inform you of the sad demise of our beloved Dr. Ms. Yvonne Freitas, on 15th January 2012, after a brief illness.

She touched the lives and hearts of countless students of Microbiology, during the forty years she taught at St. Xavier’s. For several of those years, she was the Head of Department and also served as Vice Principal of the College.
